Eurydice

Role: Orpheus

Directed by: Noah Luce
UCSC Mainstage 2023 Season

In Sarah Ruhl's iconic feminist retelling of the ancient greek myth of the legendary musician Orpheus and his wife Eurydice, our two tragedy struck lovers find themselves in the swell of romance in a contemporary 1950's setting.

On their wedding day, Eurydice is led to her death by fates beyond control, where she discovers the underworld to be a land of mysteries, paradoxes, and most importantly, her father. With him, Eurydice relearns bit by bit what it is to be human, and to be loved; all while her husband works tirelessly to the brink of madness in search of some manner of bringing back his wife through the power of music.

In conjunction with playing the guitarist Orpheus, Luka Salib also composed music used in the production(including character themes and motifs), and performed said music live as Orpheus.

"[Director] Lucé knew that Luka Salib — who portrays Orpheus — was a guitarist but did not expect him to compose the music used in the production.

“During the first week of rehearsal, he was like ‘I got really inspired and wanted to compose music. Do you want to use it in the show?'” he said. 'It was so beautiful, I was like ‘How could we not?''"
